Giving Way to Shadows

The church bells echo the streets
Bearing news of grief
Knocking on the doors
Wake! Wake!
Alarming the slumbering town
As the shadows slowly fall
Turning the day into forever night
Spilling from the harsh words spoken
Creeping from the windows open
Given space between the distance
From lack of touch, and lack of warmth
Walking with a clancking ring of keys from locked up hearts
Surplus armor in a war not fought,
Neighboors building higher fences
Caging in the voids
As the need grows deeper,
Standing aside for the shadow
That seeps in and chokes them all.
Boxes sealed without air holes
As they clutch their knives to protect themselves from one another.
